HEALING THE HEART OF DIVERSITY®
By Kate Olson
With the support of the Fetzer Institute, educator Patricia Moore Harbour developed Healing the Heart of Diversity®, a year-long program of four retreats for professionals engaged in diversity issues, and organizational and cultural change in the workplace, communities, and schools. Harbour, who has designed and led development seminars and trainings for many years, discovered that professionals working on the front lines of cultural change often wanted time to renew and heal themselves. They told her, "To support us in this difficult and sometimes frustrating work we need time together to do our own work." So Harbour designed a program where professionals can connect with others, broaden their own perspective, and ultimately be more prepared to take new action.
Harbour believes that what sets this program apart is the focus on "healing the heart." "Every time we meet someone who is different --the 'other'-- we get to choose," she says. "I get to choose to be with you out of my judgments. Or I can set those aside, open my heart and listen from where you sit. It is from that choice that new action can come."
Fetzer president Rob Lehman adds, "Healing the Heart of Diversity® is about bringing the inner dimensions of equality to civil rights work. It embodies the ideas for developing communities of freedom and a change strategy in the workplace."
